WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL

Third Molars (Wisdom Teeth) Removal
In most cases, inadequate space in the mouth does not allow the third molars (wisdom teeth) to erupt properly.  This at times makes it almost impossible to properly clean around those areas. This in turn may lead to an infection, bone loss, or decay. If a wisdom tooth becomes impacted and never fully erupts, if untreated damage to other teeth may be possible, bone loss and possibly cysts or tumors may arise.  While not all wisdom teeth require removal, most never reach a proper position and need removal.

Reasons to Remove Wisdom Teeth
  • Infection: While a wisdom tooth is erupting, the tissue around it develops a pocket around the gum, if food and bacteria trap under the tissue an infection / abscess may develop which is painful and may be dangerous.
  • Cysts: While rare, cysts and tumors can occur in the areas surrounding impacted wisdom teeth
  • Damage to nearby teeth: The molars adjacent to the wisdom teeth (second molars) may develop decay, periodontal disease (gum disease) and possible bone loss when the wisdom teeth are leaning against them.
  • Tooth Crowding: Wisdom teeth may put pressure on other teeth and cause them to become misaligned or crowded.

What Does The Removal Of Wisdom Teeth Involve?
Prior to the scheduled surgery, patients require a panoramic x-ray to be able to see the roots of the wisdom teeth.  The surgery usually takes about one hour on the day of surgery.  Generally patients need about 2-3 days (weekend) of recovery time at home.  Your dentist will discuss what to expect in detail at your consult and surgery appointment.   You will be released with post-operative instructions and medication (if necessary), to help manage any discomfort.
